Cortisol Hormone Function. Cortisol and Weight Gain

Imagine this, you just finished with all the work and are getting ready to go home. But instead of getting into the car or the subway, you decide to walk. In the very first minutes of your walking, you feel that your body somehow reacts to everything that happens. You moved from a relaxed and calm state to a state of “combat readiness”.
Cortisol hormone in human body
All these changes in the physical state are manifested in a collection of reactions taking place in your body, both biochemical and energetic. What actually allows you to use the maximum capacity of your muscles. A similar situation occurs during the period when cortisol is used, which plays an indispensable role in feeding our body with strength and energy.
In fact, the cortisol hormone is one of the main energy sources in our body. So, during your life, active or not very, your hormonal system, without the use of cortisol, tries to feed you with the necessary energy. This property of the body, known as homeostasis, is also responsible for increasing the load on the athlete’s body. And in order to avoid misunderstandings, your body must constantly nourish itself with energy. Actually, here we need cortisol or 17-hydroxycorticosterone (L Cortisol).
Your body, under the influence of stress, is experiencing an overload of the pituitary gland, i.e. increased synthesis of adrenocorticotropic hormone of the pituitary gland or simply ACTH, which in turn is responsible for how the hormone cortisol is reproduced. After that, the substance is sent directly into the blood. Here it is necessary to say a few words about the role that is assigned to hormone cortisol. Energy consists of three basic elements – glucose, fat cells and amino acids.
Cortisol and its effects
In the first aspect, the free cortisol directly affects the carbohydrate metabolism, then reaching the liver, affects the glycogen stores, releasing glucose.
In the second case, cortisol stimulates the release of fatty acids into the bloodstream, easier in the blood. Cortisol along with adrenaline or growth hormone activates lipase, an enzyme that breaks down fats, to be precise, then cortisol cleaves triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, which in turn are converted into energy.
Cortisol also has the ability to penetrate into muscle fibers, in order to stimulate and release amino acids. After that, these acids enter the liver, turning into glucose.
But, what exactly happens when our body gets under the influence of a stressful situation: in the body, the already mentioned parts of energy (fat cells, glucose and amino acids) come into action, or rather their collection and all in order to free up the accumulated energy, which after reaching the blood reaches the muscle tissue.
It is an interesting fact that during the period of physical activity, the level of stress hormone cortisol in the body is not increased and does not go down for as long as 15 minutes. This delay explains the sharp drop in the amount of fatty acids at the beginning of the training process, which in turn explains the dependence of the body on glucose.
However, at the end of 15 minutes, the concentration of cortisol begins to grow, reaching its peak in about the same period, that is, in 10-15 minutes. After that, cortisol, its level, is significantly reduced, and its low level persists for an hour and a half.
Despite all the prejudices and opinions, the drug Cortisol and eponymous hormone play at least an important role in helping the athlete with the process of maintaining physical endurance and energy. Therefore, cortisol is popular in sports such as cycling, where stamina plays a main role.
